D'VAIRE

At the end of April, the husband and I drove from our old home in Maryland to a new house outside of Las Vegas. I didn't anticipate how long it would take to put together the office I’ve always wanted but there were some unforeseen circumstances. Mainly I wound up busier than I imagined, and I broke my damn toe six weeks or so ago making it more difficult to get around. It was worth the wait and I'm delighted to share the results with you. I even fell in love with some of the images I made for this blog that I had them made into canvases! And don't ask about the ottoman, my husband is permanently scarred and can't hear the word without cringing. This is where all upcoming D’Vaire books will come to life and where the new one continues to take shape. The future is perilous for the series to continue to be published but I can’t imagine not writing these guys. They are part of the fabric of who I’ve grown to be and I relish the hours I get to spend in their compan...

So, what’s next in the D’Vaire series? I have one more book coming out this year. On November 15th, Irresistible Indigo will be released. On my website I have a list of upcoming books but it’s not always obvious who the story will feature. This one is Idris’s book. You first meet Idris as a teenager in Sentinel’s Dagger. He’s led a sheltered life where he’s had to take care of his ailing grandfather who subsequently dies leaving him alone. There’s a lot of magic inside Idris but he’s never been to school or learned to cast even the most basic of spells. He’s experimented a bit and that’s allowed him to learn some things. However, he was basically a lonely kid who just wanted someone to care about him which made him perfect prey for the always scheming Latarian. She’s not intelligent and her plans are often full of holes, but Idris didn’t hesitate to befriend her. Lazy as hell she’s not one to bother with thinking out details either giving the D’Vaires the ability to catch up with her....

I have gone back and offered what I hope is a little insight into the D’Vaire series up to the seventh book, so it was time I sat down and reflected on the eighth one. Disregarding Fate was one of those stories that took me by surprise. As I was writing Vengeance from the Dark, I found myself with an inevitable confrontation. I’d introduced the character of Cadlyr of the Cwylld in Sentinel’s Dagger, but I didn’t realize at the beginning that he was Talfryn’s brother. His past came to me slowly as I unpeeled the layers of his personality and I learned a great deal about him. I don’t know where the idea of his mate came from, but I knew right away about his funeral pyre. When I finished Vengeance, I wasn’t still wasn’t sure if Cadlyr’s mate had truly died in that fire or if he had faked it all to avoid living with the Cwylld. I moved on to the next book but the idea of Cadlyr’s story wouldn’t leave me alone. Time after time I worked through the possibilities and I became convinced...

Last week I had the opportunity to sit down with the Grand Warlock. It seemed only natural that I approach Brogan to see if he’d be willing to chat. Dra'Kaedan's Coven is finally out and I was able to convince Grand Warlock Dra’Kaedan to sit down and answer a couple of questions about himself. Creating stories are funny things. Like most of the couples in the first eight books, Albrecht and Vann were in my head for a long time. I always knew their backstory and how they wound up in their current circumstances. Like Drystan and Conley’s story, Vann was insistent that I know who and what he was before he became a fallen knight. Though Albrecht was surrounded in mystery at first, he too made sure his tale was told—not that he expected it to turn out well. He’s rather pessimistic. So, you would have thought that the book would be easy to write. I had their past and I had all these years of crafting what happens after they meet. However, as I wrote the books that came before it a lot of unsuspecting things occurred. Chander did things I hadn’t initially planned on and so did the sentinels. By the time I sat down to put together Vann and Albrecht’s outline I realized that their entire plot no longer worked. I needed different puzzle pieces to have their story make sense. Lucki...

Alaric and Chander. The first two book project I attempted. Before Alaric was ever created, the story of Chander was evolving. Resurrection (Book 4) was already fully formed in my head and unfortunately for Chander so was his role in how everything came to be. As I mentioned before, when I created the sentinels I had to find a way for them to emerge from their circumstances. It was Gavrael who was first going to be called into duty, but I realized that role would never suit him. He wasn’t going to be handle all those crowds and so I gave the sentinels a leader. Immediately it was clear to me that he was Chander’s mate. Alaric wasn’t one of those characters that slowly evolved, he stormed into my head and I knew there was something off about the man.
