His Majesty's origins and what's next...

Tomorrow you’ll get to see a brand-new cover and you’ll only have to wait two weeks to get your hands on the next book in the D’Vaire series. No Ordinary Drakeling is one of two books that feature Emperor Chrysander Draconis. When I first created the character of the man who oversaw the Council of Sorcery and Shifters it was from the point of view of Aleksander. It was a mean dude who punished Aleksander for being different and as the series went on would eventually be dethroned.

As I fleshed out more of the world I was building, I grew dissatisfied with that take because it would require me to focus on matters outside Aleksander’s mansion. I was going to focus solely on the sanctuary (which I know is growing slow as hell, but I’ll never toss anyone in there just to give you a bunch of names or not have a clue where their life is headed). But then freaking Chander came storming through and was insistent that I figure his life out. So, then Alaric was crafted, and you know what happened there. So I had to create an entire government that functioned outside of Aleksander’s mindset and the Order of the Fallen Knights were given the task of policing everyone.

Drystan roared to the forefront and suddenly I had all kinds of dragon issues. Who would replace him when he and Conley were murdered? Was I going to leave their justice in the hands of some old curmudgeon who hated Aleksander? Nope. I couldn’t do that so in stalks the noble Chrysander. I don’t know how he wound up with a twin. Damian just sauntered in with his perfect hair and sex appeal and that was that. I figured out his story first. (You’ll get to read it next year!)

Then Chrysander’s other half finally showed up. I’ve had him in my head for so long that I often forget that he’s not yet in the series. And I hope you love him as much as I do because he’s one of those guys who can’t seem to help popping into the other books. Speaking of other books, yesterday I typed the last chapter of Book 17—Unpredictable Fate. For so many of the books, the process is easy. These guys jump up and down in my head giving me no choice but to write their story. This one was a bit different. I had a character who shocked me and who acted in a way that was unexpected and when we edited his interactions with the other characters, one of my editors Hope told me this guy needs his own book. I eventually agreed and though it took me about a million variants to make it work, I’m so thrilled with the results.

What’s next? Well, I have the proof paperback copies of Dra’Kaedan’s Coven and Sentinel’s Dagger which you’ll finally get to hold in your hands this summer. As for new stuff, I’m already turning to Book 18. I have editing to do and an outline to create, but fairly soon I will start writing the story of one Prism Wizard Vadimas Porfyra which will please my other editor Jess who cannot resist a baby dragon! It's great to be home.

The husband and I flew to Washington, DC for a long weekend and we had a wonderful trip. My niece and her family spent most of that time with us, and we’d gone entirely too long without seeing each other. On Sunday night, we had the awesome opportunity to attend an Iron Maiden concert and one of my favorite bands, Within Temptation, opened for them. Origins

As I look ahead to the release of Dra’Kaedan’s Coven, my thoughts are drawn back to how it all started. There have always been characters in my head, but it wasn’t until I was a teenager that I understood they were stories that needed to be told. I have created many and for years I worked on a series of books that I still have yet to write. There are notebooks of plot outlines and timelines but nothing more than a collection of a few chapters. They are all contemporary stories and they started as M/F. My first gay character started as a secondary one, but I kept getting drawn back to him. Once I started reading M/M his story wouldn’t go away. Suddenly, it wasn’t just his story in my head but there were other couples as well. Since I have always been a gamer, its difficult for me to escape fantasy and some of these new people wanted powers. It was time to create a new series. The series returns to the D'Vaire mansion soon!

Caution: If you haven't read Blaze of Eternity yet, there are spoilers ahead! Resurrection of the Fallen was a book that, despite its length, I completed in less than three weeks. As fast as Conley drives, it’s not much of a surprise that he had to make sure his story was told swiftly. I worked from morning until night, and that book remains one of my favorite stories. The only slow day was the day I had to write the death scene. It took me a few hours to brace myself to write it, but it was otherwise a wonderful experience. One thing I love is the format, but I didn’t want to replicate unless the right project demanded it. While historical romances are something I adore and getting to play in around in the past is always fun for me, I figured Resurrection would be completely unique in that way. I know some readers don’t enjoy reading the historical content, but I started this series for me, and I will continue to write characters and stories that move me and make me want to read...
