Some endings are really beginnings

Putting together my thoughts for this blog wasn’t easy. While my anxiety and I regularly approach release days with varying levels of dread, Venerably Daray made me decidedly queasy. It wasn’t because I second guessed my decisions—for me, the story dictates everything. I do not sway my characters from telling their tale. Although I generally know the reason behind the events, those may not be revealed for a few books or many.

The storyline for Venerably Daray wasn't straightforward. I was thrilled with Samson and Brynn’s love story when I completed the novel. But there were other parts of the book that bugged me and there were many, many revisions. I still wasn't satisfied so I stepped away from it. As the weeks passed, I looked to other projects and got some much-needed clarity. The result was the full story of Venerably Daray and the lives of the reapers. One worry I had was that the events that unfolded after the matebond ceremony would somehow take away from what the book is really about—Samson and Brynnius. I dearly hope that it has not.

I had to take a giant leap away from the D’Vaire clan and so the next few books are guys mostly new to the series. Our next book features one main character who had a tiny mention in Resurrection of the Fallen. Originally, his life with his mate was intended for a short story that I intended to appear directly after Roman’s book.

As you know, Roman’s book has to surface. I know his mate. They just aren’t ready. I hope they will be soon, but the couple who had a tenuous connection to Roman and his other half were tired of waiting. I stripped them of that small link and allowed them to tell me everything. They had far too much going on as I unraveled the details to be a short story, so it’s a full novel. They are both dead guys. I believe mentioned before that I’ve recently written several books with at least one dead guy.

I don’t like giving much information about future titles. There are many reasons for that, but mostly I don’t want couples to get overshadowed. The series is long now and those guys you’ve grown to love are understandably more exciting than reading about characters you’ve yet to meet. However, given the ending of Venerably Daray, I feel compelled to tell you that I wrote Grymmie’s book.

I’ve waited since the moment Grymmie first popped into my head to get to write his story. His mate has changed in the ensuing years since the Lich Reaper first showed up with his scythe. Grymmie has changed. The D’Vaire has world changed. So, his story has evolved too.

I had glimpses into his head many times, but I didn’t fully understand him until Venerably Daray. It wasn't easy to pry everything out of him, but later this year you can get to know him as I did. But I’ll ask for your patience until Lich Reaper’s Lament arrives. And I hope you’re ready for a long one, because his book is about 120k! As you can imagine, there is much more to the story of the reapers than you've learned thus far, and our quiet Grymmie has kept many things about his life and the people in it to himself.

It was a relief to finally get to tell his perspective and a certain goddess insisted she had a few chapters too. So what am I working on now? Well, I just started a new book last week. It's two people with at least a mention (or more) in the series and I've been looking forward to this one for a while. Although not every book takes me to the D'Vaire mansion, this book does, and I love getting to put some of these guys who've been patiently waiting with their mates. I'll tell you much more next year when I can bring their novel to you.

Tomorrow in my readers’ group, I’ll share the first picture hint and title of the 29th D’Vaire book, which will be available in May! Any clue who had that cameo in Resurrection of the Fallen? Any guesses what dead guy race he or his mate are?

This one is a bit short...

Five weeks ago, I sprained my finger and unfortunately, the tears in my collateral ligaments are still healing. I’m back at the orthopedist at the end of the month to check on it and with some luck, I’ll get to stop wearing the straps anchoring it soon. As you can imagine, it’s limiting my time on the computer. But I'm squeezing in as much writing and editing as I can. It was great to finally return to the D’Vaire household with Scales and Stone, and we’ll be there again for the next edition to the series, which is a holiday story. In my Facebook group, I’ll reveal the first hint about what to expect from the D’Vaires and their loved ones tomorrow morning. Although I’d hoped to be finished with a book by now, I’m still plugging away at it. The characters are being patient with me, which I appreciate. Like Scales and Stone, it takes place at the D’Vaire mansion, and it’s been fun to hang out with some of my favorite people. At this point, I’m still paranoid about whether these...

The series returns to the D'Vaire mansion soon!

Caution: If you haven't read Blaze of Eternity yet, there are spoilers ahead! Resurrection of the Fallen was a book that, despite its length, I completed in less than three weeks. As fast as Conley drives, it’s not much of a surprise that he had to make sure his story was told swiftly. I worked from morning until night, and that book remains one of my favorite stories. The only slow day was the day I had to write the death scene. It took me a few hours to brace myself to write it, but it was otherwise a wonderful experience. One thing I love is the format, but I didn’t want to replicate unless the right project demanded it. While historical romances are something I adore and getting to play in around in the past is always fun for me, I figured Resurrection would be completely unique in that way. I know some readers don’t enjoy reading the historical content, but I started this series for me, and I will continue to write characters and stories that move me and make me want to read...

Twists and turns

Shadowy Illusions was a fun, but emotional project, and I'm thrilled that Amaury was so insistent on telling his story. He definitely deserves a happily ever after, and so do his mates. After spending a few months hanging out with the Gennevioses, I enjoyed them, but I was ready to move on.  I’ve spoken several times now in my Facebook group about how many of the books this year contain characters that came into my head long before the D’Vaire series planted its roots in my brain. I'm not sure why they chose now to demand things, but I was happy to oblige. The next book is the last of those…at least for now, because I have a ton of old stories, and I certainly can’t predict who is going to jump in and request a story next.  Unlike Matebond Dance and Deliciously Enchanted , where the stories paralleled their original tales, the couple coming next barely resemble their foundational characters. Their story has edged its way near the top of the list of books I love most. It featu...
