Twists and turns

Shadowy Illusions was a fun, but emotional project, and I'm thrilled that Amaury was so insistent on telling his story. He definitely deserves a happily ever after, and so do his mates. After spending a few months hanging out with the Gennevioses, I enjoyed them, but I was ready to move on.

I’ve spoken several times now in my Facebook group about how many of the books this year contain characters that came into my head long before the D’Vaire series planted its roots in my brain. I'm not sure why they chose now to demand things, but I was happy to oblige. The next book is the last of those…at least for now, because I have a ton of old stories, and I certainly can’t predict who is going to jump in and request a story next.

Unlike Matebond Dance and Deliciously Enchanted, where the stories paralleled their original tales, the couple coming next barely resemble their foundational characters. Their story has edged its way near the top of the list of books I love most. It features races you’ve seen before, but also not quite. That’s the best way I can explain it, and I’m sorry, I know that’s vague as hell. But I hope you'll give them a chance. Their book is also one of the long ones at over a 100k!

It’s also a new household which I always enjoy. Looking farther ahead, we are returning to the D’Vaire mansion soon, I promise. In the fall and winter, we’ll be there for both a book and a short story.

Okay, so what am I working on? I’m plugging away at the first book in the Twisted Tales of D’Vaire series. I thought this project would be so easy, but I clearly underestimated how many twists my characters would insist on. It’s been an absolute joy (and kind of scary) the way everything is different and to watch how that changes the people I’ve grown to love so dearly in the series. It’s also really exciting to look ahead and see what stories are waiting for me.

I realized as I started that in order to write more of these books; I needed to figure how every twist, so the book is going slowly, but that’s okay. The last thing I want to do is overlook anything or miss any detail. It has helped me figure out which characters could get books, and which have completed stories already written.

As I mentioned in my last blog, the book is not Dra’Kaedan and Brogan as I first imagined it would be. It features two gardeners, and their first twist occurs in 1369 at Castle Draconis. If you've read much or all of the series, I think you can probably figure out from those two clues who it is. 😀

Once I’ve completed this project, the next thing on my calendar is to write another short story. I don’t know yet if that’s going to be a traditional D’Vaire tale, a twisted one, or feature characters from my other new series. It took me a long ass time, but I'm proud to say I finally named that first book. It is unusual for me not to start with a title, but for some reason I was stumped. Thankfully, something finally clicked, lol.

As for real life, there isn't much new with me. I'm staying indoors to avoid the heat and eagerly awaiting fall. I miss opening my windows and fresh air. Mostly, I’m excited about the books headed your way soon and I hope you are too!

Origins

As I look ahead to the release of Dra’Kaedan’s Coven, my thoughts are drawn back to how it all started. There have always been characters in my head, but it wasn’t until I was a teenager that I understood they were stories that needed to be told. I have created many and for years I worked on a series of books that I still have yet to write. There are notebooks of plot outlines and timelines but nothing more than a collection of a few chapters. They are all contemporary stories and they started as M/F. My first gay character started as a secondary one, but I kept getting drawn back to him. Once I started reading M/M his story wouldn’t go away. Suddenly, it wasn’t just his story in my head but there were other couples as well. Since I have always been a gamer, its difficult for me to escape fantasy and some of these new people wanted powers. It was time to create a new series. At the start, I was going to do a mixed series. One book M/F and the next M/M. They were going to be mostly s...

The series returns to the D'Vaire mansion soon!

Caution: If you haven't read Blaze of Eternity yet, there are spoilers ahead! Resurrection of the Fallen was a book that, despite its length, I completed in less than three weeks. As fast as Conley drives, it’s not much of a surprise that he had to make sure his story was told swiftly. I worked from morning until night, and that book remains one of my favorite stories. The only slow day was the day I had to write the death scene. It took me a few hours to brace myself to write it, but it was otherwise a wonderful experience. One thing I love is the format, but I didn’t want to replicate unless the right project demanded it. While historical romances are something I adore and getting to play in around in the past is always fun for me, I figured Resurrection would be completely unique in that way. I know some readers don’t enjoy reading the historical content, but I started this series for me, and I will continue to write characters and stories that move me and make me want to read...

Making the most of time...

Every October my husband and I do our best to go to Minnesota where we spend a week relaxing in a cabin with my best friend’s mom Cecilia. (It’s just the three of us as Patrick and everyone else has declared it boring – there’s a lot of pajamas, popcorn, and movies.) Let me tell you a little about her and our relationship. When I was 23 or 24, I became estranged from my parents. It wasn’t one specific incidence or fight but a nonverbal decision on both sides that perhaps the only thing that suited us after years of issues was space. Patrick was already a part of my life and my best friend. When he got married when we were both 27, I finally got the chance to meet his family. From the moment we met them, they immediately made us feel like we were family too. Since that day sixteen years ago, we’ve spent countless moments with them. We’ve shared holidays especially Christmas, trips, and Patrick’s mom became our adopted mom. We in fact have called her mom for many years. My relationsh...
