Rise and Fall

Alaric and Chander. The first two book project I attempted. Before Alaric was ever created, the story of Chander was evolving. Resurrection (Book 4) was already fully formed in my head and unfortunately for Chander so was his role in how everything came to be. As I mentioned before, when I created the sentinels I had to find a way for them to emerge from their circumstances. It was Gavrael who was first going to be called into duty, but I realized that role would never suit him. He wasn’t going to be handle all those crowds and so I gave the sentinels a leader.

Immediately it was clear to me that he was Chander’s mate. Alaric wasn’t one of those characters that slowly evolved, he stormed into my head and I knew there was something off about the man. He had secrets and there was more to him than met the eye. No matter how I looked at the picture, Chander wasn’t going to be ready for this change in his life. He’s a man who prefers things his own way including his penchant for eating pizza at every meal given the chance. (Book 6 was affectionally known as Pizza by my amazing editors at Flat Earth Editing!) Chander and Alaric were going to have to overcome some large obstacles and he was not going to handle everything perfectly…not even close.

Chander was a character that resonated with me. He’s not perfect. He doesn’t always think logically even though if you asked him he would probably tell you that he does. Since birth the idea of Fate and her dictates was drummed into his head but he’s a man who has to learn things the hard way. There was no way I was going to be able to all the plot points into a single book which was why there were two.

I was uncomfortable with the idea of a cliffhanger though. I’m annoyed when I read one and then have to wait months to know how the story is going to end. Agonizing over the decision didn’t help matters, Chander was determined to do his thing and Alaric his. The only thing as a writer I could do was let them evolve as they saw fit. The only thing I could think of was to have the books come out a few weeks apart, so readers could get their hands on Part 2.

There are other two book series ahead. I just completed one but they weren’t as obstinate as Chander and Alaric so they are split in a much different (and less dramatic) way. I can tell you that there is one more in the D’Vaire world who will necessitate a long story but it’s too far off at this point to say if it will be another dreaded cliffhanger. If it is I can promise, there won’t be a long gap for readers to suffer through!

As you can imagine with such a long plotline, they have quite a soundtrack (and it’s a crazy mix of genres).

This one is a bit short...

Five weeks ago, I sprained my finger and unfortunately, the tears in my collateral ligaments are still healing. I’m back at the orthopedist at the end of the month to check on it and with some luck, I’ll get to stop wearing the straps anchoring it soon. As you can imagine, it’s limiting my time on the computer. But I'm squeezing in as much writing and editing as I can. It was great to finally return to the D’Vaire household with Scales and Stone, and we’ll be there again for the next edition to the series, which is a holiday story. In my Facebook group, I’ll reveal the first hint about what to expect from the D’Vaires and their loved ones tomorrow morning. Although I’d hoped to be finished with a book by now, I’m still plugging away at it. The characters are being patient with me, which I appreciate. Like Scales and Stone, it takes place at the D’Vaire mansion, and it’s been fun to hang out with some of my favorite people. At this point, I’m still paranoid about whether these...

Schereding in a new warlock book

Scheredin’s story wasn’t one I ever thought would come to fruition. As I created the D’Vaire universe, I put Noirin and Scheredin in there because they’re a vital part of my life and it was fun to add my gaming personas into my fantasy world. However, while Noirin’s path was chartered quickly thanks to Rafe and how his romance with Aleksander worked out, Scheredin didn’t cooperate in the slightest. His personality emerged as I poked and prodded at him, and he was full of surprises. I tried to pair him with multiple partners, and although I was pretty sure about his magic, I wasn’t positive he wanted to be a dark warlock until I wrote The Dragon Masquerade . But from the start I wanted Scheredin’s partner to have something to do with his gaming. For me, that was a neat way to honor the true Scheredin who exists virtually. Thankfully, Scheredin and Kieran liked the idea too, and when they were ready, the details spilled out in a rush. Their book wound up being one of those that was relat...

Two elves, a centaur, and an enviable collection of toys...

Unpredictable Fate was an interesting journey. When I started Disregarding Fate , I had an idea of what Evlithar’s life was like and why he made the decisions that he did. Evlithar wasn’t perfect and he wasn’t always right, but when I neared the end, I found myself altering aspects I thought long ago decided. The birth of Kalthekor’s child sent him reeling and he changed drastically. By the time I completed Evlithar and Cadlyr’s journey I was feeling rather sorry for Kalthekor. But I set it aside. He had a mate and unfortunately, she did not make him happy. When we got to the editing stage of Disregarding Fate , Hope (one of my editors) mentioned how bad she felt for him too and was there something that could be done to help him. Although I could understand and appreciate her point of view, Fate’s choice had been made. I moved on but it festered in my brain. Out of nowhere a centaur charged in and nothing would ever be the same. I grew excited about the idea of giving Kalthe...
