From the desk of His Highness...

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Aleksander. In the year 1369 I became the king of the Draconis Court of D’Vaire. There were only five dragons who left the court of our birth to follow me and we remained a group of six until a few years ago. Only one of them was known to me even though my only two cousins were among the mix. It didn’t matter, in time we all learned everything there was to know about each other and we became more than just a court—we are a family.

Everything changed when Dra’Kaedan arrived. I won’t go into the details of his arrival or how we came to the decision to open our doors as a sanctuary. All that information is in his book and I encourage you to read if you aren’t familiar with his story. Since that day, we have slowly grown, and I have watched in wonder as these incredible people have walked through my doors.

So, why am I writing this today? I get asked questions and since I don’t relish the idea of being interviewed, I decided to write this letter instead. I don’t like talking about myself, so I hope you will forgive me for keeping much of myself a mystery. I believe the focus should be on D’Vaire and not necessarily its ruler.

One thing that often comes up in conversations is regarding Fate. Most of the people who belong to the Council of Sorcery and Shifters eagerly await the day their other half walks into their life. I am not one of those people. Do I want a mate? I don’t want to completely negate the idea for the far distance future but currently I have no interest. It doesn’t feel as if I’m missing out. All around me are people who love me, and I care for as deeply in return. I won’t deny that I get lonely but anyone who fools themselves into believing that having a partner will completely take that away is perhaps expecting too much.

Don’t get me wrong, I am surrounded by couples who are devoted to each other and it is lovely to see. I envy their connection but perhaps I’m not suited for such devotion. It’s hard to say and as I’ve noted I’m not ready to find out. Let’s take a step outside the doors of our mansion and look at the D’Vaire series which includes people who don’t call our patch of land in Arizona home. Should Fate match me will it be the end of our books? The answer is an emphatic no.

There are many more people out there and we hope to continue to meet the fascinating people of our Council. It’s impossible to believe none of them will wind up paired so I can assure you the D’Vaire series will not crash because of me. If you want to learn more about our past and the things that have shaped our personalities as well as how we approach everything, I urge you to stay tuned. I believe each book adds another layer that hopefully draws you in closer to the people who I cherish.

Thanks for your time in reading this. I hope you will continue to take this journey with us and your questions regarding any of us are always welcome! And don't miss the upcoming release of Idris and Mac's story in Irresistible Indigo on November 15th!

It's great to be home.

The husband and I flew to Washington, DC for a long weekend and we had a wonderful trip. My niece and her family spent most of that time with us, and we’d gone entirely too long without seeing each other. On Sunday night, we had the awesome opportunity to attend an Iron Maiden concert and one of my favorite bands, Within Temptation, opened for them. While we had a fantastic time on our trip, sleep was not high on our priority list, so it’s going to take me a few days to get caught up. Beauty and Valor was released about twelve hours or so before I boarded my plane, and I really hope everyone enjoyed Preston and Ridgely’s story. Preston is an old character, and many details about where he came from and what race he belonged to changed, but the core of who he was never differed. He went through a few mates before I found the right one, and Ridgely was the perfect fit. Halfway through Gargoyle Birthright , that pair was distracting me, and there was no question that their book was re...

A sentinel and his dagger.

In my last blog, I talked about how D’Vaire was created. The first book was Dra’Kaedan and Brogan and I can’t wait for you to see their tale retold but let’s talk about what happened after the original story was completed. When I started the novel, I didn’t have an outline or anything. I wrote it by the seat of my pants and not even I knew how it would end. D’Vaire was supposed to be designed so that each one was a standalone title but when I was done there were so many things I didn’t have room to include. They would have to wait for the second which turned out to be Sentinel’s Dagger. Gavrael was the beginning of the sentinels. In fact, when I first started crafting his tale there was no Lich Sentinel. It was Gavrael (with Gedeon at his side) who was going to approach the Council to change the way the sentinels functioned within it. But I got sidetracked before his story could be completed by Chander and so things changed. (We’ll get to all that in a future post!) The thing you le...

Schereding in a new warlock book

Scheredin’s story wasn’t one I ever thought would come to fruition. As I created the D’Vaire universe, I put Noirin and Scheredin in there because they’re a vital part of my life and it was fun to add my gaming personas into my fantasy world. However, while Noirin’s path was chartered quickly thanks to Rafe and how his romance with Aleksander worked out, Scheredin didn’t cooperate in the slightest. His personality emerged as I poked and prodded at him, and he was full of surprises. I tried to pair him with multiple partners, and although I was pretty sure about his magic, I wasn’t positive he wanted to be a dark warlock until I wrote The Dragon Masquerade . But from the start I wanted Scheredin’s partner to have something to do with his gaming. For me, that was a neat way to honor the true Scheredin who exists virtually. Thankfully, Scheredin and Kieran liked the idea too, and when they were ready, the details spilled out in a rush. Their book wound up being one of those that was relat...
