I promised to answer your questions and this week we’re moving onto the Consilium Veneficus. What is it and who are they? They are the rival government to the Council of Sorcery and Shifters that rules over most of the characters featured in the D’Vaire series. Let’s talk about the origins of the Council first. It was created in 1369 by Grand Warlock T’Eirick and Grand Summoner Saura Leolinnia with the goal of uniting everyone to better them all. They represented the Coven of Warlocks and invited the four races they knew of at the time. The Order of Necromancia was and is still led by Arch Lich Chander Daray.
Killian the Dwyer ruled the Circle of Druids, Magus Superus Jordann was responsible for the Circle of Mages, and finally Arch Wizard Egidius oversaw the Circle of Wizards. Shortly after the Council was created, T’Eirick and Saura were slaughtered along with what was thought to be all their kind in a war. This led to a power struggle and eventually the remaining members of the Council selected Chander to manage their government.
From the start, Arch Wizard Egidius was convinced he was the one who should have been given the position. Over the centuries, the divide between him and the rest of the Council grew. If you’ve read Resurrection of the Fallen you know that Egidius had something that belonged to Chander and he was desperate to get it back. In a bold move, Chander promised to give Egidius the Council so he could get his property. However, it didn’t quite work out that way. Instead, Chander found himself handing over the reigns of the Council to the strongest shifters. When Emperor Chrysander Draconis took over he added many other shifter communities and the Council relocated to North America.
Egidius was pissed off enough that he kept the Circle of Wizards in Europe and created his own government, the Consilium Veneficus. It consisted of the majority of wizards (some left to form the Spectra Wizardry) and odd patches of shifters, magickind, and elves that also chose not to leave. The Consilium puts wizards before all and gives little notice or attention to the other races who belong.
As for their leader, Egidius died mysteriously a few years ago. There are few that know what happened and secrecy is prolific in their government. Fate selected a new Arch Wizard, but he’s an enigma. The true nature of Egidius’s death is revealed in No Ordinary Drakeling (D’Vaire, Book 12) which is slated for release in 2019. In that book, and the second part of the featured couple’s story (Eminently Elf, #13 also available in 2019) you will get more information about the new leader of the Consilium.
As the series continues to unfold, you will get more peeks into life inside the Consilium and their people. They want to differentiate themselves from the Council as much as possible and although they detest the people they see as enemies the Consilium ignores them. With that much animosity and resentment brewing, it’s hard to say that if they will always be content to simply pretend like the Council doesn’t exist. You’ll have to keep reading to see what happens!
